OMFG, B-DAY! (almost)

July 2nd, 2007 by rachel

So it’s almost MY BIRTHDAY.

Since i’m turning 22 this friday i’m compiling a list of things i need in order to consider myself a real adult . . .

- jumper cables in my trunk

It’s been a great week for reading and movie watching. I just finished reading Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle, which I had never read. It was wild and quite moving at points. We also watched Down by Law, Ball of Fire and Blood Simple. All of which I enjoyed, though I found Blood Simple to be utterly terrifying. Also, my new obsession is gospel music. The Dixie Hummingbirds show on Saturday was one of the better live performances I’ve seen. Perhaps if I’d been raised in a church where that was an acceptable form of praise, I’d be a more religious woman . . .

BLOOD SIMPLE is indeed a twisted film. You should check out the preview for the Coen Bros. upcoming film NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. It looks to be a return to their BLOOD SIMPLE roots.

Happy belated birthday. I just found you through the Hub City Writers Project site as I was checking out the info for submissions or maybe the first novel SC contest (however it is worded) and decided to check out your blog.

Okay - a good cake recipe, sorry I don’t make pies, and I’ve not made this cake in years but it won me first place at the county fair when I was a senior in high school if that is any help.

It is my grandmother’s (may she rest in peace) recipe but it’s a favorite in our family.

    GERMAN APPLE CAKE:

5 cups, peeled, sliced apples (time consuming I know - usually 3-4 large sized apples will slice up to about 4-5 cups)

    2 cups flour

    2 cups sugar

    1 tsp baking soda

    2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp salt (just as good without it)

    3 eggs

    1/2 cup oil

    1 tsp vanilla

1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional - I have a nut allergy so don’t use nuts but pecans or walnuts are the preferred nuts to use)

Mix dry ingredients. Add eggs, oil, and vanilla. Stir thoroughly until all dry ingredients are moistened and mixed in - batter is thick (this is not a box cake batter).

Add the apples. Pour into 13 x 9 pan. Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 hour (until toothpick comes out clean).

Serve warm or cooled, with or without whipped cream or ice cream. Is a good coffee cake too - can serve for parties - any way you like it - it’s delicious.

Not exactly a pie but just as good - E :)
